Marble countertops are very porous and require re sealing once every few months. Both stones are porous but travertine is more porous than marble and can be used without being sealed in outside areas where you don t want to slip around from standing water on the stone.

Travertine is a porous stone which is a major drawback depending on where you plan to install it. Travertine is often visibly porous giving it a more natural textured look. Many people think that travertine is marble or a type of marble but that is not the case. But while granite is one of the least porous natural stones that is not the case with marble.

How porous is granite compared to marble. Travertine is not an impervious stone rather it is considered a very porous sedimentary stone and is known to have void spaces that are distinctive features of travertine. That includes grit and grime along with acidic beverages like orange juice or even ketchup. They can absorb moisture in the shower area which can stain or discolor them and in some extreme cases may pit them.

Much like granite marble is one of the most common countertop materials chosen by homeowners. However both stones can be sealed to keep them from being stained by liquids like wine or soy sauce or even bathroom cleaning products if used in the kitchen or bathroom. These holes are filled when the travertine is collected and formed into usable tiles so not to create an overly porous substance that would be a nightmare to. However the finish choices and proper care and maintenance make marble look like as it is installed today even after several years.

The solid portion of the stone is considered vitreous and can be impervious in spots but can range up to 2 5 absorption and be acceptable for the industry standards. However when sanded down and sealed travertine tiles are smooth and suitable for flooring or as shower tiles. You can seal it to prevent stains but it will absorb liquids rather quickly in its natural form.
