A polymer is made up of many many molecules strung together to form long chains. Rubber is used for the production of many different products. They describe the attributes of materials such as rubber plastic metal etc. Generally the terms plastic and elastic are physical properties used to describe an object.

Plastic are less elastic in nature while rubber is considered as the main elastic substance. Rubber is a substance which is highly elastic and can be made harder and more resistant via vulcanization. Therefore there are two types of rubber as natural rubber and synthetic rubber rubber is very famous in industries due to its elasticity toughness etc. These vary widely in chemical structure and application and all of them synthetic except for natural.

In physics when an external force is applied to the surface of any material or a body the material undergoes a physical change or deformation. Plastic cannot be deformed once it is hardened and molded into a shape while rubber can easily be molded in different shapes even once the shape is formed. Rubber is an elastic material that is either obtained from rubber plants or synthesized using petroleum oil. What makes rubber so elastic.

Rubber can be considered elastomers and that s why when compared to plastics they are naturally more elastic. Plastic and rubber are made from the same families of polymers. Synthetic rubber is derived from crude oil whereas synthetic plastic is made of petroleum and natural gas. Like plastic rubber is a polymer which is a chain of repeating units called monomers in rubber the monomer is a carbon compound called isoprene that has two carbon carbon double bonds.

There are actually a large number of materials characterized as rubbers or more generally as elastomers. In rubber the elastic force is due to the thermal interactions of the molecules within the material. It is fundamentally different from the restoring force in a spring which relies on the mechanical stiffness of the material. Rubber and latex are not the same but many people use the words as if they both referred only to natural rubber which is the material derived from the milky white sap of rubber trees.

Plastic is a material which can be moulded into different shapes due to their malleable nature and are hard and water resistant.
